Privacy notice
KaoChess is a free game without accounts. This notice explains the data actually used to play and request help.
Controller and contact
Raphaël GAUTHIER, the nonprofessional publisher of KaoChess, is the data controller. For questions about your data or to exercise your rights, e-mail raphael-dev@proton.me.
Playing in a Room
To provide the game you request under the terms of use (performance of the service), the server handles the Room identifier, Place access tokens (PlaceToken), initial-attempt identifiers (HandshakeId), presence and accepted Intentions, game state with hidden Hands and Decks, and the Journal. These data are needed to play, but not to read the information pages. They stay in server memory: there is no account or saved-game database. A player can copy the Journal; that copy then leaves KaoChess.
On your device
Your browser locally stores a PlaceToken per Room to return to your Place, a temporary HandshakeId to retry an interrupted creation or arrival, and your language and theme choices. This storage is necessary for the game and requested preferences. The HandshakeId is removed after successful creation or arrival; if an attempt remains unfinished, you can clear it with the site's data. PlaceTokens and preferences stay on your device until you clear that data. An old token cannot restore a lost Room.
Technical diagnostics
To secure and troubleshoot connections (legitimate interest), server and hosting technical logs may include an IP address, time, error or Room identifier. They are not used to track your visits. They are kept for no longer than seven days, except when a longer period is necessary and documented for a legal obligation, dispute or security incident.
Support e-mails
Contacting support is optional. If you do, Raphaël GAUTHIER handles your address, message and any attachments to reply and resolve a problem (legitimate interest). Exchanges pass through Proton Mail. Ordinary e-mail sent from another provider is not necessarily end-to-end encrypted in transit; avoid access tokens and other people's private data. Ordinary exchanges are deleted within twelve months after the last response, or after receipt if no response was sent, except when longer retention is necessary and documented for a legal obligation or dispute. Proton says its encrypted backups may remain for up to 30 days after deletion.
Recipients and hosting
The publisher accesses data needed to operate the game and support. OVH SAS hosts the server and may handle technical diagnostics; Proton Mail provides support e-mail. Proton says its mail servers are in Switzerland, Germany or Norway. Switzerland is covered by a European Commission adequacy decision for data transfers. Your own e-mail provider also participates when you send a message. KaoChess sends no data to an ad network or audience analytics service.
Room lifetime and tracking
A Room and its Journal expire 24 hours after creation, the second Place arrives, or the last accepted game or rematch Intention, including one from an Automated player. Viewing an invitation, reconnecting, disconnecting and rejected Intentions do not extend that time. A server stop or redeployment can lose everything earlier. KaoChess uses no analytics, ads, optional tracking or embedded external content; an unnecessary consent banner is therefore not added.
Your rights
You may request access to, correction, deletion or restriction of your data. You may object to processing based on legitimate interest and request portability of eligible data where legal conditions are met. E-mail the contact above; some rights depend on the processing and its legal obligations. You can also file a complaint with the CNIL, the French data protection authority.
